Family background

John Hanafin was born on 30 May 1890 at Sydney, the son of Denis Hanafin and Mary Ann Hand.

He married Emma Violet Hodson (1911-1968) on 5 December 1910 at Sydney and they had 4 children. They lived at 24 Edward Street, Redfern. Hanafin died 13 October 1946 at Darlinghurst, NSW, aged 56 years, and was buried in the Catholic Section of Botany Cemetery.

Occupation & interests

John Hanafin, a Golden Grove Labor alderman worked as a labourer. He was representative of local alderman who were anti-communist, socially conservative with strong links to the union movement. Hanafin was a Freemason and a member of the Irish National Forrester’s.

John Hanafin was a Justice of the Peace (JP).

John Hanafin was first elected an alderman for Golden Grove Ward in 1925.
