Family background

William Kennedy was charged with deserting his wife, and a warrant issued for his apprehension, in early 1861. He was described, at the time, as being ‘about 60 years of age, 6 feet high, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, dark brown whiskers worn all around the chin, long nose, slight build, round shoulders’. He had last been seen at Maitland, and, it was supposed, had gone ‘overland to Queensland with cattle’.

Occupation & interests

In 1860 William Kennedy was a miller, trading together with Charles Newman Furlong, as ‘Furlong and Kennedy’, millers, of Bathurst Street, Sydney. In August 1860 the firm was declared insolvent.

Local government service

Kennedy was elected as an alderman for the Surry Hills Ward, Redfern Council in February 1860. He served on the Council until August that year, when he was declared insolvent.
