Family background

Thomas Augustus Small was born on 16 February 1848 at Woodford Island, Clarence River, NSW, the son of Thomas Small and Mary Hughes. He married Jane Ann Turnbull at Windsor, NSW, on 23 May 1871 and they had 3 sons and 6 daughters. They lived at 459 Cleveland Street, Redfern.

Small died on 19 August 1920 at his Myrtle Street, Leichhardt residence, and was buried at Waverley Cemetery, NSW.

Occupation & interests

Thomas Small spent the majority of his life in the Grafton district where he owned a stud farm. He established the business of produce merchant in Cleveland Street, Redfern later in life. Elected as a non-Labor representative, the office of alderman conferred status and power upon the holder – men with small owner-operated businesses closely identified with the local community. Small was elected Treasurer for the St Benedict’s Branch of the Hibernian Society in 1919.

Local government service

Thomas Small was an alderman for Redfern Council, representing Golden Grove Ward, in 1917-20.
