Family background

Peter Sutton was baptised at Oxford, England on 18 December 1823, the son of Thomas Sutton, a farmer, and Mary Burton.

Sutton married Emily Mary Augusta Leonard (1827-1898) at Sydney on 15 December 1852 and they had 9 sons and 5 daughters. They lived at the corner of Chelsea and Bourke Streets, Redfern.

Sutton died at Redfern on 30 April 1889, aged 64 years, and was buried at Rookwood Cemetery in the Methodist Section. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £8,577.

Occupation & interests

Peter Sutton worked as a successful contractor for 30 years. He was a Freemason and a member of the Robert Burns Lodge of Australia and the Robert Burns Royal Arch chapter.

Local government service

Peter Sutton was elected as an alderman for Surry Hills Ward of Redfern Council in 1867-71, and from February to March 1889.
