Family background

Henry Vernon was baptised 6 September 1857 at Coventry, Warwickshire, England, the son of Charles Vernon and Emma Birch Fisher. Vernon married Dorcas Ann Saul (1859-1886) at Coventry, Warwickshire, England, on 11 February 1877. They had one son who accompanied them when they immigrated to Australia, arriving at Sydney on 14 April 1879 on the ship Ellora.

The pair had another 2 sons and a daughter who were born at Redfern. The family lived at 96 Morehead Street, Redfern. Vernon died at Redfern on 3 April 1918 and was buried at Gore Hill Cemetery. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £13,473.

Occupation & interests

Henry Vernon operated as a self employed builder after arriving in Sydney 1879.

Henry Vernon was a justice of the peace (JP).

Local government service

Henry Vernon was elected an alderman for Surry Hills Ward of Redfern Council for two terms: 1893-99 and 1901-07. He was mayor in 1900.
