Family background

George Frederick Wheatley was born 27 June 1879 at Waterloo, NSW, the son of George William Wheatley and Mary Ann Saville.

Wheatley married Mary Elizabeth Nelson (1882-1949) at Waterloo on 6 February 1901 and they had 4 sons and 2 daughters. They lived at 18 Abercrombie Street, Redfern.

Wheatley died on 29 August 1945, aged 65 years, at Randwick and was buried at Rookwood Cemetery.

Occupation & interests

George Wheatley worked as a carter and had strong links with the union movement. He was a Freemason and a member of Lodge Robert Rae Dalziel.

Local government service

George Wheatley was elected an alderman for Golden Grove Ward of Redfern Council in 1928. He served on the council until 1934.
