Family background

Edward Robert Stack was born on 7 August 1803 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, the son of John Stack and Mary Sisk.

He arrived in Sydney aboard the ship, Recovery, on 30 July 1823. He married Sabina Palmer at Castlereagh, NSW on 17 April 1826. They had a 9 children. Sabina Stack died in September 1860, after a long illness, aged 60.

Just over a year later Edward married Sarah Ayers, the widow of John Ayers, of Parramatta. During the 1860s they lived in Nepean Cottage, Bourke Street, Redfern. Stack died on 2 January 1873, leaving a will.

Occupation & interests

Until about 1833 Edward Stack had been the assistant superintendent at Carter’s Barracks, on Pitt Street, Sydney (running along what is close to contemporary Eddy Avenue). The barracks comprised several buildings built to house convict gangs working as carters on the brick fields. It was also used, in this period, as a boys’ barracks. From 1833 to 1855 he was superintendent of the Benevolent Asylum.

Local government service

Edward Stack was elected as an alderman for the Surry Hills Ward, Redfern Council on 14 September 1859.
