Family background

George Pitt Wood was born 10 February 1871 at Patrick Plains, NSW, the son of Alfred Sherwin Wood and Catherine Mary Ferguson. He married Charlotte Beatrice Banes (1867-1910) at Waverley, NSW, on 30 July 1900 and they had a son.

Wood died on 29 May 1941 at Ashfield, NSW, aged 70, and was buried at Rookwood Cemetery in the Anglican Section. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £41,926.

Occupation & interests

George Wood was the managing director of New Cambridge Delicacies, a company trading in meat and small goods in Sydney. In the early 1900s he and his brother Alfred, conducted a storekeeping business in Taree, NSW.

Community activity

George Wood was a member of the Hospital Committee in those days and his wife died at Taree in 1910. A home for aged ladies opened in Ashfield by the Presbyterian Church in 1944 was made possible by George Wood, who bequeathed his home for this purpose, for which it was admirably suited, being commodious and with extensive grounds.

Local government service

George Wood was elected an alderman for Golden Grove Ward of Redfern Council in 1896. He served on the council until 1898.
