Alderman Redfern 1917 1919

Family background

Henry Hallam ‘Chip’ Parkinson was born on 21 March 1886 at Pitt Street, Redfern, the son of Henry Parkinson, a school inspector, and Agnes Scobie.

Parkinson married Alice Mary Manning on 23 June 1910 at St Michael’s (Church of England) Church, Moore Park by the Alice’s father, Rev J N Manning. They had two children, a daughter, Marjorie, born in 1912 and a son, Hallam Hubert, born in 1915. Throughout the 1910s they were living at Cleveland Street, Redfern.

In December 1923 Alice Parkinson appeared in the Divorce Court, seeking an order ‘directing her husband to return to her’. Alice told the court that her husband had ‘asked her to leave’ but she had refused. In February 1923 her husband had then sold her house and ‘told her to go to her mother’. Since then he had ‘made no offer to make a home for her’. The only time Alice had seen him since was when she asked him to attend to their son, Hallam, when he was unwell. The judge ordered Parkinson to return to his wife within 21 days but they divorced the following year. At the time, he had been living at 30 College Street, Sydney.

Parkinson died on 26 April 1928 in Queensland and was buried at Wowan Cemetery in the town of Wowan, Shire of Banana, Queensland.
