Family background

Joseph Malachi Gilmore was born on 6 December 1877 at Sydney, the son of Malachi Gilmore and Bridget Halloran. His brother was Francis J E Gilmore. He lived at 74 Pitt Street, Redfern. He died on 10 April 1949, aged 70 years, at Lewisham, NSW, and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery of Waverley Cemetery. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £30,731.

Occupation & interests

Energetic and ambitious, Gilmore became a successful Redfern shopkeeper and a dominant figure in municipal affairs in the inter war years.

Community activity

Gilmore was a justice of the peace (JP).

Honours & awards

Gilmore was created a Papal Knight of St Sylvester in 1929.

Local government service

Gilmore was first elected an alderman for Belmore Ward in 1917.
