Family background

Martin Gibbons was born c1831 in Limerick, Ireland, son of Stephen Gibbons and Martha. He married Mary Ryan (1838-1914) on 4 September 1859 at St Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Denmark Street, Limerick and they had a son. Martin Gibbons died on 24 February 1911 at his residence ’Lachlan Lodge’ 18 Pitt Street, Waterloo, aged 80 years and he was buried in the Roman Catholic Section of Rookwood Cemetery. He left a Will and his estate and assets were assessed at £917. Martin Gibbons had a dairy in Bullanaming Street, Waterloo in 1870.

Occupation & interests

Martin Gibbons was the licensee of the ’Prince of Wales Hotel’ at the corner of Raglan and Cooper Streets, Waterloo in 1895.

Local government service

Martin Gibbons was an alderman on Waterloo Council in 1871-73.
