Family background

Patrick Coyle was born in Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland in about 1835. He was the son of Thomas Coyle, a carpenter, and Margaret McManus, a house servant. At age 6, he arrived in Sydney aboard the John Renwick on 1 September 1841, along with his parents and two-year-old sister, Mary.

In 1867 Coyle married Margaret Moylett, in Sofala, NSW. Their first child, William was born there the following year. By 1877 they were living in Sydney. Coyle died, in 1891, aged 55, at his residence, ‘Locherne’, in Redfern Street, Redfern.

Occupation & interests

In the 1870s Coyle was a publican, first at the Clubhouse Hotel at Clarke Street, Hill End and then at the Clarence and New England Hotel at Sussex Street, Sydney. In the 1880s he and James McMahon ran a general carrying business in Sydney, known as McMahon and Company. Their business partnership ended in 1887. By 1889 he was described as a freeholder.

Community activity

In 1875 Coyle was appointed a trustee of the land at Hill End, dedicated for a racecourse and public recreation.

Local government service

In 1889 Coyle was elected as alderman for the Belmore Ward, Redfern, for three years. He served until his death in October 1891.
