Family background

Patrick Roberts was born c1859 the son of Patrick Roberts and his wife Mary. He lived at 97 Regent Street, Redfern. Roberts died on 12 November 1923 at Sydney, aged 64 years and was buried in the Catholic Section of Rookwood Cemetery.

Occupation & interests

Patrick Roberts was a tobacconist. Despite the Labor tradition of rotating the mayoralty among their alderman, Patrick Roberts was elected mayor three years in succession in 1920 to 1922, when Labor had 8 of the sitting alderman out of 12 on council. After formation of the Redfern Relief Society in 1920 Roberts visited poverty stricken homes and funds were raised to help the poor by a series of concerts, socials and carnivals.

Patrick Roberts was an alderman for Redfern Council, representing Redfern Ward in 1920-22.
