Family background
Peter Walsh was born in about 1838 in Ireland, the son of Edward Walsh and Bridget Holanhan.
Walsh married Julia Roche, probably in Ireland, and possibly arrived in Sydney in the 1850s. The pair had several children, one of whom, Lawrence, pre-deceased them in 1867.
Walsh died at Waterloo, NSW on 24 September 1885.
Occupation & interests
In the 1860s Peter Walsh was the publican at the Sportsman’s Arms, on the corner of Botany Road and Ragland Street, Waterloo. In February 1868, when the Duke of Edinburgh visited Waterloo, en route to Botany, the ‘white ensign surmounted the colours and field flags of the Waterloo Rifle Corps’ on the Sportsman’s Arms.
Two of his children, son Peter, and daughter Mary, also became publicans, at the Cricketers’ Arms Hotel, Botany Road and Raglan Street, Alexandria.
Local government service
Peter Walsh was elected as an alderman for the Waterloo Ward of Redfern Council in September 1860.
