Family background

Simon Patrick McGrath was born on 25 August 1871 at Sydney, the son of Denis John McGrath and Mary McManus. He married Ellen Augusta Yaw (1871-1954) at Sydney on 10 May 1899 and they had 6 sons and 2 daughters. He lived at 73 Abercrombie Street, Redfern.

McGrath died 27 November 1961 at Burwood, NSW, aged 90 years and he was buried in the Catholic Section at Rookwood Cemetery.

Occupation & interests

A Labor endorsed alderman from Golden Grove Ward, bricklayer Simon McGrath had strong links with the union movement and was committed to social welfare.

Local government service

Simon Patrick McGrath was elected as an alderman for Golden Grove Ward in 1920.
