Family background

Sydney Henry Gordon Alexander was born on 26 June 1893 at St Leonards, NSW, the son of Emanuel Godfrey Alexander and Eliza Jane Ann Rolston. He married (1) Minnie Templeton Prescott (1888-1954) 27 December 1915 at Redfern, NSW and they had one son and five daughters. He married (2) Daphne Irene Burless in 1956 at Sydney, NSW. Sydney Alexander died at Kyeemagh, NSW, on 13 July 1967, aged 74 years; he was buried in the Anglican Lawn Section at Rookwood Cemetery. Sydney Alexander lived at 254 Mitchell Road, Alexandria.

Occupation & interests

Alexander was a fitter for the NSW Railway and Tramway Department, from 1909 until he retired in 1963. He was dismissed during the Great Strike of 1917.

Community activity

Sydney Alexander joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) on 28 August 1939, however, on 13 September 1939 he was examined and found to be medically unfit for duty.

Honours & awards

On 29 November Sydney Alexander, Engine Room Artificer, 3rd Class, was awarded the Volunteer Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for his service in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve.

Local government service

Sydney Alexander was an alderman on Alexandria Council 1935-48 representing the South Ward. He served as mayor in 1940.
