Family background

Thomas Ginman was born at Sofala, NSW in 1871, to Thomas Ginman and Bridget Cray. He moved to Sydney at an early age. In 1890 he married Alice Climpson at Mount Carmel (Catholic) Church, Waterloo, with whom he had 2 daughters and 6 sons. From the early 1900s they lived in various places in Waterloo, Redfern and Surry Hills. He was living at Daceyville when he died on 16 March 1939 and was buried at Waverley Cemetery.

Occupation & interests

Ginman worked for the Postal Department, as a letter carrier, for 30 years, followed by 15 years working for the Australian Jockey Club and the Australian Racing Committee. In 1905, while working as a letter carried, he was declared bankrupt, being discharged in 1908.

Community activity

Ginman was a member of the St Vincent de Paul Society for over 53 years, including being president and vice-president of the Daceyville Conference (branch). He was an active hospital visitor, particularly concentrating his energies on the lazarette (where contagious diseases were treated), at the Coast Hospital. In 1917 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace.

Local government service

Ginman stood, unsuccessfully, for the East Ward, of the Waterloo Council in 1902. In February 1917 he was elected, unopposed, as an alderman for the Surry Hills Ward, Redfern Council, for the balance of an unexpired term of an alderman who had resigned. In July 1917 he was again elected, for the Surry Hills Ward, in the general municipal elections, serving until early 1920 when he was defeated at the next election.
