Family background

William Alfred John Smith was born 19 October 1883 at Waterloo, NSW, the son of Alfred Smith and Mary Jane Gregson. He married Elizabeth May Smith (1890-1968) on 8 March 1913 at Redfern, NSW, and they had two sons. William Smith died at Long Jetty, NSW on 22 July 1967, aged 83 years; he was cremated at Eastern Suburbs Crematorium. Smith lived at 51 Lawrence Street, Alexandria.

Smith was an alderman on Alexandria’s first Labor controlled Council elected in December 1928.
