Family background

William Davis was born c1844 at Bristol, England, the son of George and Mary Ann Davis. He married Emma Dark (1845-1908) at Redfern in 1889. William Davis died 26 February 1898 at his home at 105 Bourke Street, Redfern, aged 53 years, and was buried at Waverley Cemetery. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £388.

Occupation & interests

William Davis was relatively well-to-do with time to spare and was attracted to municipal office by a combination of self interest and public service. He was the publican of the Crown Inn in Crown Street, Surry Hills.

Local government service

William Davis was elected an alderman for the Surry Hills Ward in 1892 and served until 1896.
