In 1895 Richardson was elected treasurer, for the ensuing year, of the Darlington Freetrade and Liberal Association.

Local government service

Richardson was elected as an alderman for the Golden Grove Ward, Redfern Council in February 1893 and again in February 1896. In 1894 he attended an aldermen’s conference, held in the Redfern Town Hall, to condemn the provisions of the Local Government Bill currently before the colonial government.
